Our Chairman, Bryan Barlow arranged a vineyard tour and wine tasting for us with the winemaker, Todd Bostock at Dos Cabaezas on May 10, 2008. The day was warming up but the breeze felt nice. We meet at the tasting room, which is right in Sonoita. From there we journeyed the short distance out to the vineyard. Todd met us there and walked us through. One of the most amazing things we learned was that Arizona really has definite microclimate zones. Todd has one variety of grapes the same as a neighboring vineyard but his always ripen a week or two later. He said that sometimes you could almost see the difference as the weather occurs. One of the other major problems facing the vineyards recently is the difficulty in getting affordable labor. The vegetable growers are increasing the wages and making it harder for the vineyards to compete.
After the tour we headed back into Sonoita to the tasting room. Todd’s wife, Kelly, was working in the store where we ordered several bottles of wine to go with our picnic lunch. The Bostock’s allowed us to set up in the shade on their patio. We enjoyed some delicious BBQ smoked by Kendall and lots of interesting dishes brought by the members and guests. While we were dining, Todd came by and pulled some wine from his recent barrels for us to sample. Dos Cabezas offers some very good wines through Todd’s winemaking expertise.
